CLEANER AIR WITH EVERY SHARE

THE CHALLENGE

Every social share emits 0.05 grams of CO2.
Over five days at the Design Indaba, that amounts to over 3 million grams.
Ironic, considering it’s Africa’s biggest design and sustainability conference.

THE IDEA

This year, as part of their corporate environmental initiative, MTN, the event's Wi-Fi sponsor, did something about it.
Introducing Shair, a way to convert shares at Design Indaba into oxygen.
An aggregator swept social media and harvested all shares into a database using #DesignIndaba. We analysed this data calculating the CO2 emitted by the shares and offset it by planting trees in our Share for Air Forest.

DATA VISUALISATION

At the conference, we visualised this complex data in real-time as a root system on touch screens. The more people shared, the more the root system grew, as did our forest.

And the result?

We made sure that only the work at the Design Indaba took your breath away because in just five days, we planted enough trees to offset the CO2 emitted by all the social shares.
